The Sodium Hypochlorite 8-12.5% is a clear, pale yellow or greenish liquid. This chemical has a characteristic, pungent, chlorine-like bleach or disagreeable, sweetish odour.

This chemical has explosive properties - it is slightly explosive when exposed to heat and may decompose explosively under fire. Closed containers can rupture violently when heated. The anhydrous solid of sodium hypochlorite pentahydrate decomposes violently with heat or friction. Reactions with ethyleneimine or formic acid at 55°C can form explosive compounds. Methanol with sodium hypochlorite may form methyl hypochlorite, especially in acidic conditions, leading to explosions. Sodium hypochlorite used with acidified benzyl cyanide residues may also cause violent explosions. Pressure build-up may cause containers to rupture.
