Designed to be highly insensitive to water, moisture loss, and moisture absorption, Parafilm M is permeable to oxygen and carbon dioxide, making it an ideal choice for preserving the integrity of laboratory contents.
With the ability to stretch more than 350% of its original length, this self-sealing film effortlessly clings to irregular shapes and surfaces, providing a secure seal for test tubes, flasks, beakers, and other vessels. The technical data further highlights its specifications, including a thickness of 127µm, density of 0.922g/cm³, and elongation at break exceeding 350%. Parafilm M boasts a water vapour transmission rate of 1g/(m² d) at 38°C and 90% relative humidity, as well as oxygen and carbon dioxide transmission rates of 300cm³/(m² d) and 1,200cm³/(m² d) respectively at 23°C and 0% relative humidity.
With a softening point at 54°C and a melting point at 100°C, the film remains in a natural (semi-clear) colour and is non-toxic. When exposed to common reagents, Parafilm M exhibits resistance against many polar substances for up to 48 hours. However, caution is advised, as brittleness may occur after this period. The film is not recommended for use with chlorinated or non-polar aliphatic or aromatic solvents. Detailed compatibility information with various solvents, including hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, sodium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, saline solution, potassium permanganate, and iodine solution, is provided.
For optimal performance, it is recommended to store Parafilm M in temperatures ranging from 7°C to 32°C and at a relative humidity between 35% and 55%. Avoiding extremes of heat and cold, storing the product in a cool, dry, clean environment, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture, while keeping it in the original container until ready for use, will ensure the longevity and efficacy of this sealing film.
