The Crook's Radiometer is a scientific device consisting of an evacuated glass bulb approximately 70mm in diameter. It demonstrates the conversion of light energy into mechanical motion, making it a valuable tool for educational and demonstration purposes in physics classrooms and laboratories.
At the centre of the glass bulb is a finely balanced pivot mechanism supporting four lightweight metal vanes. Each vane features contrasting surfaces - one side blackened and the other side bright - designed to react differently to light exposure.
When exposed to light, the radiometer's vanes begin to rotate, illustrating principles of thermodynamics and radiation pressure. The black side absorbs more radiation and heats up, causing air molecules to rebound more forcefully and induce rotation. This visual representation aids in understanding kinetic theory and energy transfer.
