The Lever & Fulcrum Kit provides a simple yet effective demonstration of the principles of levers and moments. A metre rule balances at its midpoint on a vertical pillar mounted on a sturdy base, which rests on a table.

The setup illustrates that when the weight multiplied by the distance (the moment) on one side of the pivot equals the weight multiplied by the distance on the other side, the system achieves balance due to equal opposing moments.

Kit Components & Setup

The kit includes a 1-metre wooden rule fitted with a knife-edge at its midpoint, allowing it to pivot like a see-saw on a vee bearing mounted on a metal stand. The ruler remains 150mm above the bench, enabling free movement and easy placement of weights. Two 50g slotted weight carriers are supplied, designed to hook over the edge of the rule and slide smoothly to any point for precise positioning.

Understanding Equilibrium & Moments

When weights are added to the carriers on either side of the pivot, the system illustrates the principle of equilibrium. The moment is calculated by multiplying the total weight (including the hanger) in grams by the distance in centimetres from the pivot point.

The lever remains balanced when the moment on both sides is equal, providing a hands-on method for understanding force interactions in physics.

Additional Considerations

This kit does not include slotted weights, as many schools already have suitable weights available. It is designed for educational settings, offering an engaging way to explore fundamental physics concepts.
