The Linear Air Track provides a near-frictionless system for studying mechanics both quantitatively and qualitatively. This innovative apparatus supports various experiments, enabling users to explore fundamental principles of motion, mass, and direction.

Design & Functionality

The air track consists of a long, straight, 90° triangular-shaped tube mounted on three adjustable feet to ensure it can be levelled. Small holes are drilled along the sloping sides of the tube, through which air is pumped by an external blower. This air escapes through the holes, creating a cushion that allows objects to glide effortlessly.

Gliders & Collision Mechanics

Anodised aluminium gliders, shaped with a 90° internal angle, are placed on the track. They float on the air cushion and slide with minimal friction. These gliders have spring bumpers, ensuring they rebound with almost zero energy loss during collisions. Various weights and attachments can be added to the gliders, enabling a wide array of experiments.

Air Source & Noise Control

The air source for the Linear Air Track (080119-0001) is a compact, variable-speed blower designed for ease of use. It operates quietly, featuring a styrene foam shroud to minimise noise, though it can function without the shroud if necessary.

Care & Maintenance

To ensure optimal performance and longevity:

• Cover the track with a cloth or protective cover to prevent dust and dirt accumulation.
• Avoid sliding gliders or devices on the air tube without the air blower operating.
• Prevent heavy objects from dropping on the track surface to avoid dents or damage.
• Handle buffer springs carefully to prevent distortion or breakage.
