MILWAUKEE Refractometer, Digital, for Salinity

This Digital Refractometer for Salinity measures the refractive index to determine the salinity of natural and artificial seawater, ocean water, or brackish water. It eliminates the uncertainty of mechanical refractometers and is portable for use on ships, at shore facilities, or at home.

Simple and quick to use, this instrument requires only a one-point calibration with distilled or deionised water. Within seconds, it measures refractive index and temperature, converting results into one of three common units: Practical Salinity Units (PSU), salinity in parts per thousand (ppt), or Specific Gravity (S.G. (20/20)).

Measurement Methodology

The conversion algorithms are based on respected scientific publications reflecting the physical properties of seawater, rather than sodium chloride alone. Temperature (in °C or °F) is displayed alongside the measurement on a large dual-level LCD, which also features helpful message codes.

Design & Usability

This refractometer features an IP65-rated waterproof enclosure and a stainless steel sample well with a sealed flint glass prism for durability and easy cleaning. Only 2–3 drops of sample are required, with results delivered in under 2 seconds. The unit includes a battery percent level indicator and automatically shuts off after 3 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life.
