Luminol LR is a laboratory-grade chemical supplied as a solid beige to yellow powder. It is insoluble in water and readily soluble in methanol, making it suitable for controlled analytical and experimental applications. The material is classified as non-dangerous goods under the Australian Dangerous Goods Code.
This compound is commonly known as luminol and is also identified by several alternative chemical names, including 5-Amino-2,3-dihydro-1,4-phthalazinedione, 3-aminophthalhydrazide, and 3-aminophthalic acid hydrazide.
It has the chemical formula C8H7N3O2, a molecular weight of 177.16, and is registered under CAS No. 521-31-3.
This chemical is widely used as a chemiluminescent reagent for detecting copper, iron, peroxides, and cyanides. Its oxidation reaction produces a distinctive emission of light, which underpins its value in analytical chemistry.
Additional applications include the detection of nitrates, selected alcohols, amines, amino acids, carbohydrates, enzymes, enzyme substrates and vitamins.
The product is not classified as dangerous goods according to the Australian Dangerous Goods Code and is not scheduled as a poison. However, it is classified as hazardous under the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) in accordance with Australian work health and safety regulations.
Care should be taken to avoid the generation or accumulation of dust during handling. Use in well-ventilated areas is recommended, and suitable respiratory protection should be worn if ventilation is insufficient.
Avoid ingestion and inhalation of the material, and ensure hands and face are thoroughly washed after use. If feeling unwell, seek medical attention and present the product label where possible.
It should be stored in a cool, dry location with containers kept tightly closed at all times. The material must be stored away from oxidising agents and acids to maintain stability and reduce the risk of unwanted reactions.
Waste material should be disposed of in accordance with national and local regulatory requirements. Chemicals should remain in their original containers before disposal. This product must not be discharged into waterways, drains or sewers.
