This Polyethylene Glycol 4000 (PEG 4000) is a laboratory-grade polyethylene glycol polymer. It is also referred to as PEG, PEG 4000, PEG 4k, macrogols, poly(ethylene glycol) and polyethyleneglycol.
This water-soluble polymer is widely used as an excipient, osmotic agent and formulation additive in laboratory, analytical and formulation applications. Chemical identifiers include CAS RN 25322-68-3, EC Number 500-038-2 and molecular formula represented as (-CH2CH2O-)n.
It has an average molecular weight in the range 3600 - 4400 and a reported molecular weight distribution commonly stated as 3,600 - 4,400. The material typically appears as a white powder, crystals or flakes and is offered as a formulation-grade polymer suitable for sample preparation, reagent formulation and general laboratory use.
This chemical is a solid at ambient temperature with a melting point of approximately 50 - 60°C. A 10% solution in water produces a clear to faintly turbid, colourless solution; the pH of a 5% aqueous solution typically falls between 4.5 - 8.0.
The substance is biodegradable and not classified as a hazardous substance or mixture for transport or storage under current classification criteria.
It is supplied in a square white high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottle with a screw closure and a capacity of 750ml. The packaging is UN certified for the intended powder form.
Store this polyethylene glycol 4000 in a cool, well-ventilated area and keep containers tightly closed to avoid moisture uptake. Recommended storage temperature is +20°C, and the product is suitable for ambient shipping.
To minimise risk during handling, avoid the formation or spread of dust in the air; keep the material away from direct contact with water or high humidity before use.
As a biodegradable polymer, PEG 4000 should be transferred to a suitable container and arranged for collection by a specialised disposal company where required. Dispose of in accordance with local regulations and standard laboratory waste procedures for non-dangerous solids.
Harmonised Tariff Code: 3907291190. Shipping temperature: Ambient. UN Certified. Not classified as hazardous for transport in its supplied form.
