This BENTO Bird Sexing Starter Kit provides all the materials needed to perform DNA-based bird sexing, offering a reliable alternative to visual or behavioural identification.

It is ideal for sexually monomorphic species, where males and females appear identical, and allows accurate sex determination using feathers, blood, or eggshell samples through PCR techniques.

Complete Workflow & Materials

This bundle includes chemical reagents, plastic consumables, and accessory equipment required for the Bird Sexing Workflow.

Users can efficiently extract DNA from bird samples and identify sex chromosomes (Z and W) using PCR and gel electrophoresis. The kit supports a minimum of 48 samples and can be expanded with additional reagents for higher throughput.

Chemical Reagents & Consumables

Reagents include HotSHOT DNA Extraction Kit (400 reactions), 5X HOT FIREPol® Blend Master Mix (100 reactions), PCR-grade water, three sets of Bird Sexing Primers, Agarose tablets, GelGreen® DNA stain, 10X TBE buffer, and 100 bp DNA Ladder.

Consumables include 0.2ml PCR tubes, 1.5ml microcentrifuge tubes, pipette tips, nitrile gloves, and scalpels. Accessory equipment includes adjustable pipettes, a sharps bin, and a beaker.

Required Equipment

This kit does not include PCR, centrifuge, or electrophoresis equipment. Users will need Bento Lab or similar systems, a heat source to melt agarose, and 1L of distilled or deionised water for buffer preparation.

Storage & Stability

The HotSHOT DNA Extraction Kit should be stored sealed at room temperature or 4ºC; freeze at –20°C for long-term storage.

5X HOT FIREPol® Blend Master Mix, Bird Sexing Primers, and DNA Ladder must be stored at –20°C. All other components can be stored at room temperature. The kit is shipped at ambient conditions.
