This Light Box & Optical Kit in a Gratnells Tray is a comprehensive teaching tool designed for secondary and tertiary physics education.
Housed in a durable Gratnells storage tray, the kit includes a mirrored light/ray box and 29 optical components. It enables a wide range of experiments in geometrical optics, including reflection, refraction, and colour mixing.
Ray Box Design
The included light/ray box features a bright 12V, 24A halogen lamp that produces convergent, divergent, or parallel beams. One end incorporates an adjustable cylindrical convex lens for producing parallel beams, while the other features a triple aperture system and a hinged mirror for colour mixing experiments. All apertures are equipped with vertical channels to hold slit plates and colour filters.

The kit comes with a complete set of 29 optical components: one light/ray box with hinged mirrors, one lamp holder, two 12V (20W) bulbs, two 4mm banana plug leads, two slit plates, eight mounted colour filters, eight colour cards, one rectangular prism, one 45/45/90 prism, one equilateral prism, one 30/60/90 triangular prism, one semicircular prism, one bi-concave lens, two bi-convex lenses, one plane mirror on stand, one parabolic mirror, one semi-circular mirror, one semi-circular dish, and one instruction manual.
Instruction Manual
A comprehensive instruction guide is included with 18 structured activities that support hands-on learning. The activities cover key principles in optics and guide students through practical demonstrations using the components provided.
Power Requirements & Additional Materials
A 12V DC power supply is required for operating the ray box (not included). For full participation in all activities, students will also require a ruler, protractor, and paper, which are not supplied with the kit.
